    (IANS)

China Friday marked the 65th anniversary of Japan's surrender and paid homage to soldiers who died fighting during the Second World War, Xinhua reported.

At the Museum of the War of Chinese People's Resistance Against Japanese Aggression in Beijing, Chinese President Hu Jintao, Prime Minister Wen Jiabao and other officials presented bouquets to honour the war martyrs.

'The victory was a major event in the 20th century. It was significant for the Chinese nation and overall progress of human civilisation,' said Li Changchun, senior leader of Communist Party of China (CPC).

Li, who was speaking at a seminar to mark the victory, hailed the spirit of Chinese people during the 14-year war and praised CPC members who played a key role in uniting the nation.

He urged the promotion of a patriotic spirit and strengthen the party and international cooperation to ensure world peace and justice.

People from all walks of life mourned the martyrs at various ceremonies across China Friday.
