Dordt College to offer BSN completion program

Posted: Wednesday, March 15, 2006
SIOUX CENTER, Iowa -- Dordt College and St. Luke's College of Sioux City announced Monday they will partner to offer a program on the Dordt campus that will lead to a bachelor of science in nursing degree.

The program will begin this fall and is available to current freshmen and all those who come after them.

Students will take their coursework on the Dordt College campus, but take their clinicals and a one-credit pharmacology course at St. Luke's.

The agreement is an enhancement of an existing collaboration. Under the new agreement students will receive an associate of science in nursing degree, or ASN, from St. Luke's College after their junior year. They will then be eligible to sit for the national licensure exam to become a registered nurse. After their senior year, they will receive a BSN from Dordt College.

"We are very excited about being able to offer a Dordt BSN degree from start to finish," says Pamela L. Hulstein, chairperson of the Nursing Department at Dordt College. She said the program will train nurses to function in the multiple roles offered in today's job market: hospitals, community health centers, business, industrial and occupational health, health care administration and affiliated services. She said the Dordt degree will give students a solid educational background that incorporates analytic, as well as interpersonal skills.

The partnership also allows Dordt students to spend their entire four years living on the Dordt College campus in Sioux Center and minimizing travel to Sioux City.

Dordt is a Christian college which enrolls about 1,250 students in more than 40 academic programs leading to associate, bachelor's and master's degrees.
