DELHI: With the Assam polls approaching fast, government seems to be fighting
shy of making a clean breast of the extent of infiltration from
Bangladesh.
The reluctance was
evident in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday when it refused to give any estimate of the
illegal influx of Bangladeshis even as it shared with the House details of
Pakistani infiltration in J&K.
It defended its stand saying
that "as this activity takes place clandestinely, no specific detail is
available about the magnitude of the infiltration into India".
The government's written
answer came from the minister of state in the home ministry, S Regupathy, in
response to a question whether a large number of Bangladeshi infiltrators have
been residing in Assam and West Bengal.
